Two seals, two different jobs

A typical outdoor tap and hose system involves two separate sealing points, and they use different seal types:

  • Tap adapter to tap thread — flat washer. The threaded adapter that screws onto the tap outlet uses a flat rubber washer compressed between the adapter face and the tap outlet face. This is a flat face connection — the thread clamps, the washer seals. Found inside the adapter at the point it contacts the tap.
  • Quick connect body — O-ring. The push-and-click quick connect fitting that attaches the hose to the adapter seals on a small O-ring inside the female quick connect body. This is a radial seal — the O-ring is compressed against the male hose connector when the connection is engaged. Why outdoor washers fail — and why replacing like for like often repeats the failure

What to check and replace

  • Identify the leak point — adapter-to-tap thread or quick connect body. The location determines which seal to replace.

  • Inspect the seal — check for hardening, cracking, permanent compression or surface damage. A seal that appears intact but has lost flexibility will not seal reliably under temperature cycling.
  • Replace with an appropriate outdoor material — for outdoor water service, EPDM is generally more suitable than standard NBR for both the flat washer and the quick connect O-ring. UV and ozone resistance matters more outdoors than for indoor plumbing connections.
  • Reconnect and check — run the tap and check both connection points under water pressure.

If the joint still drips after replacing the seal: check the condition of the tap outlet face. If the threaded outlet is corroded, damaged or has scale deposits on the seating face, even a new washer may not seat evenly. Clean the face before refitting. If the tap outlet thread is damaged, the adapter may need replacing rather than the washer alone.
