Washing machine hose leaking —
how to find it
and what to replace

Many washing machine hose leaks come not from the hose body itself but from the seal inside the fitting at each end.
A flat rubber gasket or mesh filter washer sits inside the threaded connection where the hose meets the tap or the back of the machine. When that seal fails, the joint drips. The hose body is often fine. The failed part is usually the seal inside the fitting. Replacing it is usually inexpensive and often takes only a few minutes.

First — find exactly where the leak is coming from

Before replacing anything, dry the area around the hose with a cloth and run a short cycle. Watch carefully to identify the exact leak point. The location tells you what to replace.

Drip at the tap — where hose meets wall tap
Water appears at the threaded connection between the hose end and the tap. The fitting may look tight but still drips during or after the fill cycle. The flat gasket or mesh washer inside the hose fitting has failed. The seal inside the hose fitting is the usual failure point here, rather than the hose body itself.

Common
Drip at the machine — where hose meets inlet valve
Water appears at the back of the machine where the hose screws onto the inlet valve. Same seal failure, different end. The gasket or mesh washer inside the machine-end fitting has hardened or cracked. Many machines use a mesh washer here to protect the solenoid valve.

Less common
Water along the hose body
Water appears along the length of the hose rather than at either connection. The hose itself has split, cracked or been damaged. This is less common but does occur in older machines where the hose has been kinked repeatedly or has aged in a hot location.

Check first
Leak from under the machine during wash cycle
Water appearing under the machine during a wash — not just at connection points — may indicate a drum seal, pump seal or internal hose failure rather than the external inlet hose. This is a different problem. If the external connections are dry and water still appears underneath, the fault is internal.

The two seals — gasket and mesh washer

Inside each threaded end of a washing machine inlet hose there is a flat seal. It sits in a recess inside the fitting and is compressed between the fitting face and the tap outlet or machine inlet face when the connection is tightened.

Flat rubber gasket: a plain flat ring of rubber. Seals the connection and nothing else. Found at both the tap end and the machine end in many standard hoses. When it hardens or cracks, the joint weeps. For potable water connections, the replacement gasket material should be suitable for water-contact duty. In most household repairs, the immediate priority is to match the seal type and size correctly, then confirm the material is appropriate for the service.

Mesh filter washer: a flat rubber ring with a stainless steel mesh screen bonded into the centre. Seals the connection and simultaneously filters debris from the incoming water supply. Protecting the solenoid valve inside the machine from scale and sediment is its secondary function. Often found at the machine end of the inlet hose, though some hose designs also use them at the tap end. When the rubber surround degrades the connection leaks. When the mesh blocks, the machine may have difficulty filling.

Which one does your hose use? Unscrew the hose fitting from the tap and look inside the fitting end. If you see a plain black or grey rubber ring, it is a flat gasket. If you see a metal mesh screen surrounded by rubber, it is a mesh filter washer. Both are replaced the same way — the old one comes out, the new one drops in.

Why PTFE tape usually does not fix this

A common attempted fix is to wrap PTFE tape around the thread of the tap or hose fitting before reconnecting. This does not address the problem.

Washing machine hose fittings are flat face connections — the seal forms between the flat end of the fitting and the flat face of the tap outlet, through the gasket compressed between them. The thread provides clamping force only. PTFE tape is for tapered thread connections where the thread itself seals. On a flat face connection, tape on the thread does not create a seal and may prevent the faces from closing correctly.

If the joint still drips after fitting new PTFE tape, it is because the gasket — not the thread — is the sealing element, and the gasket has not been replaced.

How to replace the seal

Turn off the water supply

Close the tap the hose connects to. If there is no isolating tap, turn off the mains supply. Have a towel ready before disconnecting.

Unscrew the hose fitting

The hose fitting is hand-tightened in most installations — try by hand first. If it is tight, use pliers with a cloth to protect the fitting surface. Unscrew the fitting from the tap. Have a towel ready for residual water.

Remove the old seal

Look inside the fitting end. The gasket or mesh washer sits in a shallow recess. Hook it out carefully with a blunt tool. Avoid scoring the recess surface.

Check the seal size

For many standard washing machine inlet hoses, the connection is 3/4 inch and a common seal size is around 24×16×2mm, though variations exist between hose manufacturers. Check the old seal dimensions if possible before replacing.

Fit the new seal and reconnect

Drop the new seal into the recess — it should sit flat. Reconnect according to the appliance and hose instructions. Hand-tighten unless the manufacturer specifies a further turn or torque; do not apply a universal quarter-turn with pliers to a plastic nut or inlet valve. Turn on the supply and check for drips during the first fill cycle.

If the connection still drips after replacing the seal: check that the new seal is the correct size and is seated flat in the recess — a folded or misaligned seal will not form a complete seal. Also check the condition of the tap outlet face. If the tap face is badly corroded or damaged, even a new seal may not seat evenly and the connection may continue to leak.

Common sizes for washing machine hose seals

Most UK and European washing machine inlet hoses use a 3/4 inch BSP connection at both ends. The flat seal inside each fitting is typically one of the following sizes:

  • 24×16×2mm — the most commonly encountered size for standard 3/4 inch washing machine hose fittings
  • 24×16×2.5mm — a slightly thicker variant used in some hose brands
  • 24×18×2mm — a wider bore variant used in some fittings

Dishwasher inlet hoses typically use the same 3/4 inch connection and the same seal sizes. Always check the actual fitting size before ordering — measuring the old seal is more reliable than assuming.

Sizes are indicative for common European washing machine and dishwasher inlet hoses. Actual dimensions vary by manufacturer and hose series.
